Arenal was dormant for hundreds of years before erupting in 1968 and destroying the town of Tabacón. 

It is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and one of the ten most active in the world. It is located in the northern zone of the country.

Arenal Volcano area is an important watershed for the Arenal Lake Reservoir. It’s now a dormant stratovolcanic cone that first erupted about 38,000 years ago.
