The highest mountain in Australia, Mount Kosciuszko, is in the southeast corner of New South Wales, where it is part of the Great Dividing Range.

Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain, is accessible via a road from Charlotte Pass, a road to Rawson Pass, or via the Charlotte Pass road to Rawson Pass.

Aboriginal names

Several Native Aboriginal names associated with Mount Townsend are Jagungal, Jar-gan-gil, Tar-gan-gil, Tackingal. All mean the same thing: Bogong Moth.

Geography

The mountain was formed by geologic uplift. It was formed by granite intrusions and heavily eroded sedimentary rocks.

Reaching the summit

Mount Kosciuszko is the highest summit in mainland Australia. The road to the summit is closed to motor vehicle access, and the summit is reached by walking or cycling.

The peak can be reached from Thredbo, taking 3 to 3.5 hours, and is popular in summer. 

Hannel’s Spur Track is a 15.5 km hike up Mount Kosciuszko that is officially Australia’s biggest vertical ascent of 1800m. The trailhead is located 1.4 km from the Geehi Rest Area on the Alpine Way road.

The peak is snow-covered in winter and spring. The road from Charlotte Pass is marked by snow poles.

The peak may also be reached by a chairlift, and the highest public toilet in Australia is located at Rawson Pass at 2,100 meters.

Mount Kosciuszko is an active volcano in Australia located in Kosciuszko National Park. It is popular for skiing and may have been ascended by Indigenous Australians long before the first recorded ascent by Europeans.
